THE WALLYPUG OF WHY
Writer and Director: Georgia Pollock-Barker
Producer: Glen Matthews for Waikato Actor Training
Based on the novel by G.E. Farrow
The Meteor, 30 September-3 October 2026

The Wallypug of Why is based on the Victorian novel of the same name. G.E. Farrow was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”, and the themes of fantastical characters and situations were carried over to this story.
The show opens with Girlie and her little sister Junior lamenting their disappointment that their brother has gone to the beach while they are stuck at home. A doll in the corner of the room comes to life and takes them to the Land of Why where they meet unusual people and talking animals while searching for the mysterious Goo.
Waikato Actor Training threw open the doors this year and now have more than twenty students on their books. Accordingly, The Wallypug of Why is their inaugural production.
For some cast members, it was their first ever on-stage appearance whereas others had multiple shows to their names. Many had extensive dialogue to deliver while also puppeteering. They were well-rehearsed, and no issues arose with their diction or voice projection. Several played a couple of characters with vastly different personalities which gave them the chance to showcase their acting skills. Across the stage, each gave a heartfelt and enthusiastic performance while keeping the energy up.
Georgia Pollock-Barker’s script included te reo and silly puns. Some highlights were lullabies that keep you awake; a fish fishing for compliments; the human race; and seeing a question from both sides (which was a hilariously staged). An eager crew executed all scene changes, and the production was supported by talented props makers and a clever technical team.
The Wallypug of Why is an entertaining kids show where real life is forgotten as you become immersed in the Land of Why for a couple of hours. There are four more opportunities to see Kirikiriroa’s newest acting school and their actors strut their stuff. This show is ideal for those looking for something to do during the school holidays.
Although this is short notice, tonight’s (Thursday 1 October 2026) 7pm performance is a “relaxed performance” meaning no sound turned down, lights dimmed, no rustling food packets or drinks allowed in, doors to foyer open, pre-show introduction to the characters. I am so thrilled that this option is available. Congratulations to Waikato Actor Training on your first fully fledged production.
