MY INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT LIFE

Updated: Oct 9, 2021

Written by: Melanie Allison Director: Andrew T. Lyall and Melanie Allison Starring: Hannah-Rose Cook, Jenny Parham and Jared Wooldridge

Before Melanie Allison’s debut show “My Incredibly Important Life” even hit the stage, it already had high expectations. The play had been shortlisted and nominated in 2020 for Playmarket’s Playwrights b4 25 category. Due to its potential, the play received funding via Creative Waikato’s Creative Community Scheme. These accolades show that there is a lot of grassroots support and belief in Allison’s work.

Hannah-Rose Cook starred as Amelia, a daughter determined to publish her first novel about her life, particularly the relationship with her mother. Cook was endearing across all the age ranges that she played and was able to deliver the juvenile insights and teenage angst with admirable agility.

Jenny Parham as Amelia’s mother was reminiscent of Cheryl West, a hard drinking non-maternal woman with enormous issues. Parham was utterly compelling. The solid script was gold for her as she could delve deep into the mindset of someone consumed by loneliness and alcoholism.

Jared Wooldridge played Amelia’s schoolfriend James turned book publisher. His speaking voice is splendid and he journeyed convincingly through being reserved, defensive, and ultimately vulnerable. Wooldridge was a great casting choice opposite Cook.

The non-chronological storyline was excellent. Often stark transitions between eras can be jolting and disorienting but the play was directed in such a way that it seemed natural to swerve between different times in Amelia’s life.

The Meteor’s Black Box had been arranged in a more intimate style and there were no issues with sound levels or voice projection. The set and props were extensive for a one act play. Whereas other companies may have edited the staging to the bare bones, My Incredibly Important Life was visually interesting particularly when paired with skilled lighting design.

If the costume design is tweaked and the marketing collateral consistent, My Incredibly Important Life would be an excellent fit for smaller venues and the festival market, both here and overseas.
