Life is full of choices. You can choose to go to NASA, or you can choose to go to The Meteor to complete basic space training and obtain your Interplanetary Travel Authority pass.
Destination Earth was written and directed by well-known local actor Courteney Mayall. She also starred in the show, and had a hand in costumes, props, set dressing, and video production. Husband Jeremy Mayall provided the music including an extraordinary otherworldly soundtrack prior to the start of the show.
Also starring were Jono Freebairn, Kahi Morgan and Alex Pelham-Waerea. Hamilton icon Benny Marama featured in a non-physical way, but you will have to see the show to understand.
Destination Earth was entertaining, educational and fun with smatterings of input from the audience. Freebairn did exceptionally well to riff off the answers coming from the crowd. That’s the thing with kids shows, no matter how well rehearsed you go into the season, there’s just no accounting for children’s imaginations when they are completely swept up in a story unfolding before their eyes.
Both Pelham-Waerea and Mayall were able to showcase their stunning vocal talents, and Morgan maintained an outstanding extraterrestrial posture throughout.
The educational elements were woven into songs and added an extra dimension to the performance. Aside from leaving with my very own Interplanetary Travel Authority pass (nice touch, Team Mayall), I also left with the knowledge that space pirates speak with French accents. That was a revelation.
Congratulations to Courteney on the massive undertaking to write, direct and perform in a show that is superbly suited to audiences of all ages. From the moment of entry into the theatre, real life is truly left behind.
Galaxy crazy kids (or any space-loving parent) will be delighted to know that tickets to invade the Milky Way start at a mere $9. Take-off is occurring daily until Saturday 11 July 2020.
